The Secret of Homoeopathye
Dr Shivani Lakhtakia
Even when the disease is the same, the way homoeopathy treats it in different people could be different. The individual characteristics and case history make each patient’s case unique

Shabana* came to my clinic complaining of irregular and heavy periods, acne and gain in weight. The 23-year-old thought it was the stress of her job, with the layoff threat looming large again after Obama’s latest proclamation, which was affecting her health. But a visit to the doctor told her otherwise. She was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a condition caused due to the imbalance of ovarian hormones. Since some women are asymptomatic, it is particularly hard for them to detect the condition. Only when it becomes problematic, such as in cases of inability to conceive, women turn to their doctors to ask for their expert advice and seek treatment.

Some women, on the other hand, have quite pronounced symptoms, including irregular or absent periods, obesity, acne and/or skin pigmentation, weight gain and insulin resistance It could also be literally hair raising, with excessive hair growth on parts of the female body where it normally doesn’t (hirsutism) and absence of it on the head (malepattern hair growth or baldness). In addition, high blood pressure has also been reported, as well as dizziness, exhaustion and depression. The psychosocial effects of PCOS are also important, as suffering women tend to have poor body image and low selfesteem.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder affecting one in 10 women of reproductive age and is a leading cause of infertility, according to latest medical news. It is a genetic condition and one strongly associated with obesity.

Conventional medical treatment of PCOS is tailored to the patient’s needs. Broadly, these may be considered under the categories: lowering of insulin levels; restoration of fertility; treatment of hirsutism or acne; restoration of regular menstruation and prevention of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer.

Homoeopathic Treatment
Effective treatment of PCOS is available in homeopathy. Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine, based on an understanding of the interconnection between mind and body. It is a safe and effective system of medicine that treats the patient at all the three levels - physical, emotional and mental. Homoeopathy makes the patient healthier, not just by fighting symptoms but also by addressing the root problem i.e. an imbalance in the body.

For example, in the case of Shabana the diagnosis was PCOS, but when I took her detailed case history, it was revealed that two years back she had the emotional trauma of losing her father in a road accident. She was very much attached to her father. Her body could not bear the tragedy and she became very depressed and gloomy. She lost interest in her work and people. Her defence mechanism affected her hypothalamic-pituitary axis and it was due to that that she developed PCOS. After taking homoeopathic treatment for six months, she showed signs of great improvement and soon came back to her normal self, feeling healthy completely.

How Homoeopathy Works
Homoeopathy is based on individualisation. Every patient suffering from a particular disease, PCOS in this case, cannot be prescribed the same medicines. Each patient has his or her own characteristics and history, which make their case special. Detailed case history is vital for successful homoeopathy prescription. This is because homoeopathy treats the patient, and not the disease. According to homoeopathy, disease is an external manifestation of internal derangement.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on natural laws and has been practised all over the world for almost 250 years. Since homeopathic remedies are made from plants, animal substances, minerals and salts, they work at an energetic level, stimulating the body’s own healing abilities and are prescribed on the principle of ‘like cures like’. Homeopathy understands the interconnection between mind and body and therefore, makes the patient healthier not just by fighting symptoms but also by addressing the root problem - an imbalance in the body.

The human being is an integrated whole acting all the time through three distinct levels: the mental, the emotional, and the physical. The mental level is the most important and the physical, the least. In disease, the reactions of the defence mechanism to various stimuli are of most concern. The human being, from the moment of birth, lives in a dynamic environment, which affects his system at all times in many ways, and is therefore obliged to adjust continuously in order to maintain a dynamic equilibrium. If the disease stimuli are stronger than the organism’s natural resistance, a state of imbalance will occur with signs and symptoms. The results of this struggle can be seen primarily upon the mental, emotional or physical levels, depending upon the overall state of health at the moment of the stress.

By taking a full case history, homeopathy aims to treat the whole person, taking into account his constitution, which includes his nature, will, morals, speed and emotional reactions to the different stimuli like environment, anger, love, lifestyle and hereditary factors as well, and not just the disease. Instead of attacking symptoms with strong drugs, homeopathy aims to stimulate and strengthen one’s immune system, thereby helping the body’s natural tendency to heal itself.

Homeopathic medicine is prescribed in very low dilution after a special individualisation process, after taking into account, individual symptoms and characteristics. It has wide applications from acute cold, fever, diarrhoea to several chronic diseases like asthma, migraine, depression, skin ailments and so on. If followed diligently, homeopathy can cure almost any disease!
