Vertigo refers to the sensation of moving or spinning while the body or surrounding environment is actually stationary.


  • Respiratory tract infection

  • Built up of otoliths or ear crystals
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Migraine
  • Low blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Brain tumors
  • Certain medication


  • Whirling sensation
  • Disorientation
  • Imbalance
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Hearing loss
  • Vision problems
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Weakness
  • Sweating
  • Rapid heart rate

Treatment depends on the underling cause and may include:

  • Vestibular rehabilitation
  • Epley maneuver involving physical therapy
  • Medications like antibiotics, antihistamines, anticholinergics, diuretics, etc.
  • Surgery when other treatments fail

There is no specific prevention for vertigo.
