Vasculitis is a common term for conditions causing inflammation and damage to the blood vessels which comprise of both arteries and veins.

Its causes are not known.

Symptoms vary according to the organ affected and may include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • High blood pressure
  • Joint and muscle pains
  • Breathlessness
  • Mouth or nose ulcers
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Ear infections
  • Vision problems
  • Red and itchy eyes
  • Tingling and numbness in the limbs
  • Pain and weakness in the limbs
  • Paralysis
  • Skin problems like hives, bruises, itchiness, etc.
  • Genital and skin lesions
  •  Loss of mental function

Treatment is specific to the organ affected. General treatment includes:

  • Cortisones
  • Immunosuppressants

There is no way to prevent vasculitis.
