Syphilis

 

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease.

Causes

  • Treponema pallidum bacteria
  • Sexual contact with an infected person
  • Infected mother to the unborn child

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on the stage of syphilis and include:

  • Painless sore on the genitals, lips, moth or anus
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Body rash
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Problems with heart, brain and nervous system

Treatment

  • Antibiotics, especially penicillin

Prevention

  • Practice safe sex
