Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

 

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory disease.

Causes

  • SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV )
  • Close contact with infected person
  • Respiratory droplets of an infected person
  • Contaminated objects and surfaces

Symptoms

  • Fever above 38 °C or 100.4 °F
  • Sore throat
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pneumonia

Treatment

Treatment for SARS is still under study. Currently it includes:

  • Antibiotics
  • Antiviral medication
  • Steroids
  • Ventilatory support

Prevention

  • Washing hands frequently
  • Avoiding contact with infected people
  • Isolating infected patients
  • Wearing protective clothing like gloves, masks and gowns while dealing with infected patients
