Renal Osteodystrophy

 

Renal osteodystrophy is a condition of the bones due to inability of kidneys to maintain correct calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.

Causes

  • Kidney disease
  • Hyperparathyroidism

Symptoms
Symptoms may or may not be present. They include:

  • Bone deformities like bowed legs, short height, etc. in growing children
  • Weak bones and fractures
  • Bone and joint pains

Treatment

  • Avoiding dietary phosphate
  • Phosphate binders
  • Calcium and vitamin D supplements
  • Calcitriol
  • Dialysis
  • Kidney transplant

Prevention

  • Avoiding kidney disease
  • Consult a renal dietician if suffering from kidney disease
