Prostate Cancer


Prostate cancer is the formation of cancerous tumors in the prostate gland, usually in older men.

Its causes are not known but risk factors include:

  • Old age
  • Family history
  • Race
  • Certain medications
  • Environmental toxins
  • High fat diet

Symptoms may not be present in all cases. When present, they may include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Weak urinary stream
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Pain in lower back or upper thighs

Treatment varies from patient to patient and may include:

  • Observation
  • Radiation therapy
  • Hormonal therapy
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy

There is no prevention for prostate cancer but risk can be reduced by:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Limiting alcohol intake
  • Regular exercise
