Neurocysticercosis

 

Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic disease of the central nervous system causing cysts in the brain.

Causes

  • Tapeworm Taenia solium eggs
  • Consuming food or water contaminated by human feces containing tapeworm eggs
  • Consuming undercooked pork containing tapeworm eggs

Symptoms

  • Epileptic seizures
  • Headache
  • Hydrocephalus

Treatment
Treatment is not recommended always and the body gets rid of the cyst on its own. When required, treatment may include:

  • Anti parasitic and anti inflammatory drugs
  • Surgical removal of the cysts

Prevention

  • Wash hands before handling and consuming food
  • Store meats separately and correctly
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before consumption
  • Avoid consuming undercooked food, especially meat
