Malignant Mesothelioma


Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer affecting the linings of the chest, abdominal cavity or around the heart.

Causes are not clear but a very strong risk factor is:

  • Exposure to asbestos

Symptoms appear only in the later stages and may include:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest pain
  • Chronic cough
  • Weight loss
  • Swelling in the abdomen
  • Mass in the abdomen
  • Abdominal pain
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Fever

Malignant mesothelioma can not be cured. Survival can be increased by:

  • Surgery to remove the cancer
  • Chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and slow down the cancer
  • Radiation to destroy the cancer cells


  • Avoid exposure to asbestos
