Kyphosis is abnormal curving of the spine leading to bending or hunching of the back.


  • Incorrect posture
  • Certain medical conditions like osteoporosis, arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Scheuermann’s disease, etc.
  • Congenital defects
  • Trauma
  • Infections like tuberculosis
  • Tumors

Symptoms may not be present in mild cases. If present they include:

  • Rounded back
  • Tenderness and stiffness in the spine
  • Pain
  • Breathing difficulty

Treatment varies from patient to patient and includes:

  • Correcting the posture through physical therapy
  • Medication for pain and infection
  • Bracing
  • Surgery to correct the spinal defects in severe cases

All types of kyphosis can not be prevented but postural kyphosis can be avoided by:

  • Maintaining a correct posture
  • Exercising regularly to strengthen the back
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
