High blood pressure or hypertension is an increased pressure of blood in arteries, usually over 140/90.

A lot of time causes are not clear but secondary hypertension may occur due to:

  • Kidney disease
  • Tumors of the adrenal gland
  • Diabetes
  • Certain medications such as birth control pills, cold medicines etc
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Excessive salt in diet
  • Obesity
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Cocaine

Symptoms are not present most of the time. Sometimes symptoms may include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nosebleed


  • Lifestyle changes such reducing weight, reducing salt and alcohol intake etc.
  • Medications
  • Treatment of underlying cause in case of secondary hypertension


  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Maintain sugar levels if diabetic
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy diet with low sodium intake
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake
