Hot Flashes


Hot flashes are temporary sensation of excessive heat accompanied with flushing and excessive sweating, usually in menopausal women.

Causes are not known but a strong possibility is:

  • Low levels of estrogen

Symptoms may occur suddenly and last for a few minutes to half an hour. They include:

  • Excessive heat in the face and upper body
  • Redness on the face and upper body
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Chill on subsiding

For mild symptoms:

  • Consuming cool water and fluids
  • Keeping the environment cool

For severe symptoms:

  • Estrogen replacement
  • Estrogen with progesterone replacement


  • Avoid stress
  • Avoid spicy foods
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Avoid smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Dress lightly
  • Consume plenty of water
