Guillain Barre Syndrome

 

Guillain Barre Syndrome is an autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system causing progressive muscle weakness and paralysis.

Causes
Causes for this syndrome are not known.

Symptoms

  • Weakness beginning in the legs and spreading to the arms and upper body
  • Tingling sensation
  • Loss of reflexes
  • Paralysis
  • Difficulty in breathing

Treatment
There is no cure for this syndrome but symptoms can be managed by:

  • Plasmapheresis to remove the harmful antibodies from the body
  • Immunoglobulin therapy to intravenously inject high doses of immunoglobulins to block the harmful antibodies

Prevention

There is no way to prevent this syndrome.
