Guillain Barre Syndrome is an autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system causing progressive muscle weakness and paralysis.
Causes for this syndrome are not known.
- Weakness beginning in the legs and spreading to the arms and upper body
- Tingling sensation
- Loss of reflexes
- Difficulty in breathing
There is no cure for this syndrome but symptoms can be managed by:
- Plasmapheresis to remove the harmful antibodies from the body
- Immunoglobulin therapy to intravenously inject high doses of immunoglobulins to block the harmful antibodies
There is no way to prevent this syndrome.
