Gastroenteritis is an infection of the stomach and intestines.

Treatment is usually not required in healthy adults and it gets cured on its own within a few days. Symptoms can be managed by:

  • Drinking a lot of fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Avoiding milk products and foods that are difficult to digest
  • Antidiarrhea medication in some cases
  • Antibiotics in some cases of bacterial infection


  • Maintaining adequate hygiene
  • Washing hands after using the toilet
  • Washing hands before handling food or eating
  • Washing fruits and vegetables before eating
  • Appropriate storage of raw food especially meat
  • Hygienic cooking of food
  • Not mixing raw and cooked food
Drinking adequately filtered or purified water
