Epididymitis

 

Epididymitis is a condition where there is inflammation of the epididymis which is a tube like structure at the back of the testicle.

Causes

  • Bacteria
  • Sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia or gonorrhea
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Prostatitis
  • Reflux of urine
  • Certain medications
  • Surgery related to genitals or urinary tract

Symptoms

  • Pain in the scrotum
  • Redness and swelling in the scrotum
  • Painful urination
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Increased frequency or urgency of urination
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Discharge

Treatment

  • Bed rest
  • Supporting the scrotum
  • Cold compresses
  • Antibiotics
  • Medications such as pain killers and NSAIDs

Prevention

  • Practicing safe sex
  • Avoiding sexual intercourse with a partner having STD
  • Preventive dose of antibiotics in surgeries posing risk of infection
