Edema

 

Edema is swelling or puffiness caused due to abnormal fluid accumulation in the tissues between the cells in the body.

Causes

  • High intake of salt
  • Pregnancy
  • Sitting or standing in one place for too long
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Certain medications
  • Certain conditions such as heart failure, liver or kidney  problems etc.

Symptoms 

  • Swelling under the skin
  • Stretched and shiny skin over the swelling
  • Dimpling of the skin on putting pressure for a few seconds

Treatment

  • Treating the underlying cause
  • Reducing salt intake
  • Diuretics or water pills
  • Elevating the legs in case of swelling in legs and feet

Prevention

  • Avoiding high blood pressure
  • Avoiding excessive alcohol
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Avoiding being still for too long
