Diverticulosis is a condition where small pouches or projections are formed in the lining of the colon or large intestine. When these projections get inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis.

The causes are not clear but some of the possibilities are:

  • Low fiber diet
  • Straining due to constipation
  • Lack of exercise
  • Genetic factors

Diverticulosis usually does not cause symptoms. If present they include:

  • Mild cramps
  • Bloating
  • Constipation

Symptoms of diverticulitis include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Tenderness usually on the left side
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Fever


  • High fiber diet
  • Pain medication
  • Antibiotics to cure the infection
  • Surgery in case of complications


  • Avoid constipation
  • Eating a high fiber diet
  • Consuming lot of fluids
