Conversion Disorder

 

Conversion disorder is a psychiatric condition causing neurological symptoms but without any apparent neurological cause.

Causes

  • Severe stress
  • Emotional, physical or sexual abuse
  • Psychological problems

Symptoms
Symptoms include loss of one or more bodily functions such as:

  • Blindness
  • Speech loss
  • Hearing loss
  • Paralysis
  • Numbness
  • Fits or seizures
  • Coma

Treatment

  • Psychotherapy or stress management to help recover from the underlying cause
  • Physiotherapy to maintain flexibility and strength of the affected part
  • Medications to manage depression or anxiety if present

Prevention
There is no way to prevent conversion disorder.
