Contact Dermatitis

 

Contact dermatitis is a skin condition due to direct exposure to an irritant or allergen.

Causes

  • Harsh soaps or detergents
  • Rubber
  • Certain plants like poison ivy
  • Certain metals like nickel
  • Certain medications
  • Certain perfumes or cosmetics
  • Certain chemicals

Symptoms

  • Red rash
  • Blisters or hives
  • Itchiness
  • Burning pain

Treatment
Generally, the symptoms subside on their own. In severe cases treatment may include:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Antihistamines

Prevention

  • Avoiding known irritants
  • Using protective clothing if dealing with irritants
