Coma is a state of deep unconsciousness. Coma is not a disease condition. It is a condition that is reactive to a medical situation.

There can be many different causes for coma.  They include:

  • Head trauma
  • Brain infection
  • Lack of oxygen
  • Stroke
  • Intoxication
  • Central nervous system abnormalities
  • Diabetes


  • Deep sleep which cannot be broken
  • No response to pain or light
  • No reaction to the environment
  • No voluntary actions

Coma is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. It may include:

  • Supportive care for breathing
  • IV fluids and medication
  • Treatment of underlying condition
  • Hyperventilation, diuretics or surgery to reduce brain swelling
