Chronic Pancreatitis

 

Chronic pancreatitis is the swelling or inflammation of the pancreas which lasts for a long period of time leading to irreversible damage of the pancreas.

Causes

  • Alcohol overuse
  • Gallstones
  • Prolonged use of certain medications such as steroids
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • High levels of calcium or fat in the blood

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Pale foul smelling stools
  • Weight loss

Treatment

  • Abstinence from alcohol
  • Low fat nutritious diet
  • Pancreatic enzyme supplements
  • IV fluids
  • Pain medication
  • Surgery to remove blockage or a part of the pancreas

Prevention

  • Avoiding excessive use of alcohol
  • Promptly treating acute pancreatitis
