Chronic Laryngitis

 

Chronic laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx or voice box which lasts for more than a few days.

Causes

  • Viral infections
  • Overuse of vocal chords
  • Trauma
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Exposure to irritants like dust or chemicals
  • Heart burn or GERD

Symptoms

  • Hoarseness
  • Dry throat
  • Cough
  • Discomfort while swallowing

Treatment

  • Resting the vocal chords
  • Consuming warm and soothing fluids
  • Antibiotics to cure bacterial infection
  • Curing the underlying condition

Prevention

  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid exposure to irritants
  • Avoid straining the vocal chords
