Chondromalacia Patella

 

Chondromalacia patella is a condition of abnormal softening and degeneration of the cartilage under the knee cap.

Causes

  • Injury
  • Overuse
  • Malalignment of knee cap
  • Instability
  • Flat feet
  • Knock knees
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle weakness

Symptoms

  • Grating or grinding sensation on moving the knee
  • Knee pain which worsen on climbing stairs, sitting or keeping the knees bent for prolonged periods
  • Knee stiffness and tenderness

Treatment

  • Conservative treatment which includes resting and ice application
  • Medications such as NSAIDs to relieve pain may be used
  • Physical therapy to stretch and strengthen  thigh and leg muscles
  • Surgery may be required in some cases to correct malalignment of the knee cap

Prevention 

  • Appropriate warm up before physical activity
  • Avoiding trauma or injury to the knee
  • Avoiding excessive pressure on the knee
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Appropriate foot wear with proper shock absorbers
