Unintentional grinding or clenching of teeth especially while sleeping is called bruxism.

The causes are not clear but some of the possibilities are:

  • Misaligned upper and lower teeth
  • Stress
  • Nervousness
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Aggressiveness
  • Feeling of competition

  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Worn out teeth enamel
  • Shortened teeth
  • Jaw pain
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Tongue indentations
  • Damage to inside of the cheeks

Most children outgrow bruxism by the time permanent teeth appear and need no treatment. In other cases treatment includes:

  • Consciously relaxing the jaw and keeping the teeth apart
  • A protective teeth guard to reduce teeth damage due to pressure
  • Counseling to reduce any cause of stress or anxiety
