Bowel Obstruction


Bowel obstruction also called intestinal obstruction is a partial or complete obstruction of the small or large intestine causing interference in the normal passage of waste products of the body.


  • Post operative adhesions or scarring
  • Twisting or inflammation of the intestines
  • Loss of peristaltic movement of the intestines
  • Lack of abdominal blood supply
  • Certain medications
  • Certain medical conditions like tumors, hernia and Crohn’s disease


  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Inability to pass gas

Treatment usually requires hospitalization. It includes:

  • Stopping consumption of food and water
  • Intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Insertion of nasogastric tube to remove fluids and gas from the stomach
  • Liquid or air enemas
  • Surgery in case of complete obstruction and in case of loss of abdominal blood supply
