A blister is a rounded swelling or bulge on the skin containing fluid.


  • Friction
  • Exposure to intense heat or cold
  • Allergic reactions to chemicals or insect bites
  • Certain health conditions such as chicken pox


  • An elevated area on the skin filled with serum, pus or blood
  • Tenderness and pain in the affected area
  • Redness around the affected area

Most blisters heal on their own. Some things to keep in mind are:

  • Do not burst the blister
  • Try to keep the affected area clean without applying pressure
  • Cover with soft sterilized dressing to protect it from rubbing against things during the day
  • Take medical help if the blister gets infected


  • Wear well fitting and comfortable shoes
  • Wear gloves to avoid friction when doing activities causing excessive rubbing
  • Keep skin clean and dry
  • Avoid strong detergents and chemicals
  • Avoid excessively hot or cold temperatures
