Biliary Colic

 

Biliary colic is pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.

Causes

  • Gallstones
  • Obstruction in the bile ducts

Symptoms

  • Sudden pain which lasts for 1-5 hours
  • Pain or cramping that starts in the right side of abdomen and may radiate to the back, the right side of the chest or right arm
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Flatulence

Treatment

  • Dilation of the restricted passage, if any
  • Medications to dissolve the gallstones if any
  • Surgical removal of the gallstones or gallbladder

Prevention

  • Controlling the risk factors for gallstones
  • Controlling obesity and high fat diet
