Antiphospholipid Syndrome


Antiphospholipid syndrome is an immune system disorder causing the body to make antibodies against phospholipids in the blood leading to abnormal blood clotting and pregnancy complications.

All the causes for this condition are still not known though it is sometimes caused by:

  • Certain immune disorders like lupus
  • Viral infection
  • Certain medications


  • Abnormal blood clotting especially in the lower extremities
  • Repeated miscarriages
  • Premature birth
  • Still birth
  • Stroke

Treatment is given with the help of medicines that help to thin the blood and reduce clotting. They include:

  • Aspirin
  • Warfarin
  • Heparin
